The experience during my ARISE secondment programme at the Royal College of Pathologists in October 2022 to January 2023 offered me the rare opportunity to interact with renowned experts in the field of haematology.
I worked on work packages 3 and 4, which involved laboratory diagnosis, quality management systems, clinical management, and newborn screening of sickle cell disease.
The laboratory experience saw me move through special haematology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ (GSTT) and the Red Cell Lab at Kings College Hospital London (KCL). Yvonne Daniel and her team made learning and cross-fertilization of ideas seamless. This was further enforced by the expansive team led by Claire Laas.
I also improved my clinical expertise through interactions with the highly industrious and experienced Dr Rachel Kesse-Adu and her team in clinics and ward rounds. The experience at KCH through Drs A wogbade and Brewin John will forever be appreciated.
I further appreciated the synergy and harmony between newborn screening, counselling and patient management after interacting with Nkechi, Kemi and the rest of the team members at Wooden Spoon House. This gave me more insight into the pivotal role of counselling in the overall screening programme.
My entire stay wouldn’t have been successful without the support and guidance of Kelley Price, who was always forthcoming and gave tips on how to adapt to the reality of London life. I also appreciate Dr Wale Atoyebi, whose reassuring words kept me going.
Finally, I wish to show my profound appreciation to Prof Baba Inusa, Duccio, Ola, Serena, and all other staff who made my stay memorable.
