Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (UK)
Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) is dedicated to providing high quality, personal care for all patients with this vision being at the heart of everything that the organisation does. In a recent survey, GSTT was the best performing London teaching Trust in the nation.
The Trust provides world-class sickle cell service for the single largest sickle cell patient population in Western Europe. Located in London, a full range of medical services is provided for local residents as well as specialist services for patients from further afield. Care takes place in two of London’s best-known teaching hospitals, Guy’s Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital, where Evelina London Children’s Hospital is also located. The INPUT pain management centre provides a unique residential pain service which is one of only a few services in the world that has particular expertise in neuromodulation and spinal stimulator implantation.
The hospital system is part of King’s Health Partners (KHP) one of only six Academic Health Sciences Centres in England designated by the Department of Health. Through a joint venture with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Serono PLC, GSTT has strong links with Viapath, which is the UK’s largest provider of world-class pathology services.
The Trust is involved in a number of projects across specialities to improve wellbeing of patients. One of such projects include the GSTT Zambia Partnership which focuses on Sickle Cell, patient safety & infection control, Adolescent and maternal health.
With an exceptional history of excellent patient care and links to well renowned medical and teaching services, GSTT provides an excellent training platform to those willing to learn and contribute towards improving patient care.
Fondazione per la Ricerca Farmacologica Gianni Benzi onlus (Italy)
Fondazione Gianni Benzi (FGB) is a registered not-for-profit scientific research organisation promoting research in biological, medical and pharmaceutical areas, with particular reference to the needs of patients affected by rare diseases and other populations with specific therapeutic needs, including children. FGB activities are mainly focused on the regulatory, ethical and methodological support to research as well as on data science.
FGB participates in many national and international initiatives in which it contributes to the planning and conduct of interventional and non-interventional clinical studies, dealing with methodological aspects such as design, compliance with ethical and regulatory requirements, data collection and analysis, and IT tools set up (platforms, database, e-learning instruments, surveys). In many of these initiatives FGB is also in charge of project management.
Elaborating and revising guidelines and regulatory recommendations is one of the applications of the FGB methodological expertise.
Furthermore, FGB carries out Health Technology Assessment (HTA) reports including analysis on the use of drugs and other health technologies aimed at providing summaries and assessment of the available evidence, including PROs (Patient Reported Outcomes) and Quality of Life (QoL).
Haemoglobinopathies are one of the key topics of FGB, that has been managing the Italian Multinational Thalassemia Patients Registry for many years. FGB is partner of relevant international studies and patients’ data collection initiatives including beta-thalassemia, Sickle Cell Diseases and other rare Haemoglobinopathies.
Several resources are invested for patients’ empowerment, supporting them in becoming protagonists in the development of new medicines and therapies as well as in the appropriate use of existing ones.
FGB activities are also addressed to dissemination, education and training (e.g. the yearly Foresight Training Course, a high-level specialised short course) devoted at spreading new and existing knowledge, also considering European strategies in the regulatory field.
Lagos State University (Nigeria)
Lagos State University (LASU) Badagry Road, Ojo was established as a public University 1983 enabled by the Lagos State law. The College of Medicine was established 20 years ago and is situated on the same premises as the affiliate Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja, Lagos.
It is also 10 min drive from the Lagos Murhtala Muhammed International airport.
The hospital and College of Medicine (LASUCOM) jointly are well staffed and equipped to support robust activities of clinical subspecialties of Dentistry, Surgery, Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and support services.
The teaching hospital has well developed radiological and laboratory services for studies in Microbiology, Chemistry, Haematology and currently setting up a molecular research laboratory.
We have robust blood banking services upon which the hospital and large sections of the State rely. LASUTH has over 600 beds and Intensive care Unit and Critical Care Unit. The hospital has a helipad for air evacuation and receipt of airlifted patients.
Our adult and paediatric Sickle Cell clinics have over 1000 patients each and an adolescent transition clinic is currently being developed. Our hospital facilities and services are accredited by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, the Nigerian Universities Commission, the National and West African Postgraduate Colleges of Medicine and of Surgery for undergraduate and postgraduate medical training.
University of Abuja (Nigeria)
The University of Abuja (UA) is a government owned University located in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital.
The University was established on the 1st day of January 1988 (UA Act of 1992 No 106). There are 10 Faculties in the University namely: College of Heath Sciences, Faculties of Agriculture, Arts, Education, Engineering, Law, Management Sciences, Science, Social Sciences and Veterinary Medicine. All courses are accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). In addition the College of Health Sciences (CHS) is also accredited by Medical and Dental council of Nigeria (MDCN).
The UA is a young university which has developed from one of the least in Nigeria to the top 10 in just about 2 decades of its establishment, largely due to excellent management and location at Abuja FCT, thus the UA is attractive to the academics, students and partners alike. The University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) is affiliated to the University of Abuja. The teaching hospital has a total of 133 Clinical specialist consultants in various specialties of human medicine. The Chief Medical Director is Professor Bisalla A. Ekele.
The University of Abuja thus has very great potential to become one of the leading universities in Africa and globally. Abuja the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is multi ethnic, multi religious and home for all Nigerians. FCT has great social life and security and is therefore also suitable for international staff exchanges, tourists and visitors.
University of Ilorin (Nigeria)
University of Ilorin & University of Iloin Teaching Hospital are both public institutions operating specialist care centre for patients with Sickle Cell Disease in Nigeria. Professor Kolade Ernest, MBBS, Cert Health Plann & Mgt., FWACP, MNIM, FRCPCH, provides leadership for the University of Ilorin Team.
University of Ilorin established several Community surveillance (COBES) centre that have been used over several years, a new TCD machine just installed, Malaria Centre is an independent premise solely for research and Bactec Machine for Microbiology. Few of Previous. Research involvement: UNICEF Acute Respiratory infection project, National micronutrient survey, AQUAMAT project that led to antimalarial global policy change by WHO, Randomised clinical trial of 3 antimalarial chemoprophylaxis among SCD patients, Mass Haemoglobin screening of Primary school pupils, Hepatitis B infection among SCD children, Hepatitis C infection among SCD children, G6PD Screening among SCD children. WHO Polio Vaccine (OPV/IPV) Randomized Clinical Trial. Currently many research activities are also going on, including; Comparativeness of Mercury and Infra-red non-touch Thermometers, National Rotavirus surveillance and Assessment of Quality of Life and hospital services among SCD patients.
International Foundation Against Infectious Disease in Nigeria – IFAIN (Nigeria)
IFAIN is committed to improving the quality of life of children in Nigeria, and the rest of the world, by reducing the burden of infectious and related diseases.
Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa and has one of the highest under-five mortality rates in the world. Recent studies have established that invasive bacteria are the leading cause of childhood mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa and that most of these infections are preventable from routine vaccination or proper primary care. Unfortunately, a poor understanding of the magnitude of these bacterial infections and their associated illnesses has not lead to significant advancements in their prevention or treatment.
The International Foundation Against Infectious Disease in Nigeria (IFAIN) was established to facilitate the generation of a credible surveillance system for the determination of the etiologic agents of bacterium syndromes and opportunistic infections in the general population of Nigerian children. Data from these systems are being, and will be, used to development new tests and vaccines as well as to monitor the impact of medical interventions. Of particular interest is the etiology of disease in vulnerable populations, such as children who suffer from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), sickle-cell disease (SCD) and malnutrition.
Zankli Medical Centre (Nigeria)
Zankli Medical Centre in Abuja is a secondary care medical group practice that provides care in various specialties of Medicine and Surgery and encourages the development of academic and research activities in collaboration with a number of institutions both at home and abroad.
The first High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) machine for newborn screening for Sickle cell disorder in Nigeria was installed in the Zankli Research laboratory in 2010 during the Sickle cell cohort pilot study funded by the UNDP. Sickle Cell Clinic runs weekly with a trained nurse counsellor. Routine Newborn SCD screening is done in the hospital. Regular immunization and antenatal clinics provide cohort of patients. Reliable X-ray services are available including CT scan, 4D ultrasound scans and full time consultant radiologists. The routine laboratory is well equipped for Microbiology, Chemistry, Haematology and Immunology with BD BACTEC 9050 and FX40 Blood Culture Systems, D10 (Biorad) HPLC machine, Biosafety cabinet, GeneXpert and a variety of other standard lab equipment.

University of Padova (Italy)
The University of Padova is one of the oldest and most prestigious seats of learning in Europe and has a long tradition and consolidated reputation for scientific excellence.

The University of Padova was one of the first Universities in Italy and in Europe to be acknowledged with the HR Excellence in Research Award by aligning its policies to the 40 principles of the Charter & Code in 2012. Based on an action plan 2017-2019, the University of Padova recently obtained the renewal of the award. Furthermore, the University of Padova is one of the leading Italian Universities in Italy for the quality of its research results according to the report issued by the National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes. The International Research Office supports researchers who wish to apply for EU-funded research projects or in projects funded by other international organizations. It is a reference point for departments and research centers that manage EU and international research projects. University of Udine
The University of Udine (UNIUD) is an Italian Public University founded in 1978 by National Law.
Currently UNIUD offers 36 first cycle degree courses and 37 second cycle degree courses. In addition, the University offers postgraduate teaching and research, with a broad and diverse range of training courses. It has 15.497 students and 652 professors and researchers. Since May 2016, the University of Udine officially obtained the HR Excellence in Research Award from the European Commission. In health care sector, UNIUD has 8 first cycle degree courses, 1 single cycle degree course and 1 master degree course.
The medical department (DAME) has almost 100 professors and researchers and almost 2.000 students. DAME research activities are mainly organised within the following research clusters: Active ageing, Cardiovascular sciences, Degenerative and inflammatory diseases, Diabetes and nutrition, Education and simulation in health, Exercise physiology, sport medicine and rehabilitation, Imaging e advanced diagnostics, Microbiology, Infectious diseases, Molecular and clinical oncology, Neurosciences, Pharmacology, Precision medicine, Public health and welfare, Tissue regeneration and transplantation, Women and children health. UNIUD has an affiliated partner that will host secondments connected to clinical activities: Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria (ASUFC). ASUFC is a 900‐bed tertiary University Hospital accredited as Academic hospital by the Joint Commission International (JCI). The affiliation of ASUFC to UNIUD comes from a specific agreement between Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia and University of Udine signed in 2016.

The University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, formerly Second University of Naples, with its 16 departments located in 5 territorial areas between Naples and Caserta, promotes a vocational training, offer integrated with the territory, supports quality research, and promotes the creation of business initiatives from research groups, in a constant perspective of internationalization and cultural exchange with other universities.
The University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” was established in 1991 and began its activity on November 1st 1992. Currently there are nearly 28 thousand students and 16 Departments. The University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” actively participates to the Health Ministry National Projects on Rare Diseases and the Regional Network for Rare Diseases. It is routinely assessed by the Region for the appropriateness of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and patient care. The University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” is a member of the “AIEOP (Italian Association of pediatric hematologt oncology) and is a National Reference Centre for congenital anemias included in the SITE (Italian Society of Thalassaemia and Hemoglobinopathies) and a Regional Reference Center (RRC) for several subsets of diseseas; in particular one RRC is related to a specific European Reference Network: “Rare Hematological Disease Center” (Prof. Silverio Perrotta and Dr Maddalena Casale).
American University of Beirut (Lebanon)

Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa (Portugal)
Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa is a public institution consisting of 8 schools that offer a diverse range of courses at undergraduate, master’s, postgraduate and doctoral levels in a wide range of areas, from music to engineering to health.
Its goal is to provide an academic instruction focused on employability and professional excellence, in parallel to research development and public engagement. This promotes a sense of citizenship and allows the strengthening of relationships with national and international partners. It is integrated in the Urban Research and Education Knowledge Alliance consortium with other 7 European universities and is an actively participant in the ERASMUS + programme, acting as host institution for over 300 international students.The investment in research and innovation is evidenced by the funding of over 40 projects for Research, Development, Innovation and Artistic Creation every year. The Cyprus Foundation for Muscular Dystrophy Research (Cyprus)
The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) was established in 1990, as a bi-communal, non-profit, private, medical, research and academic centre. It develops and provides high level medical and clinical laboratory services, advanced research and education in the areas of Neurology, Genetics, Biomedical, Medical and other related sciences.
The Institute is equipped with some of the latest, high-tech laboratory and clinical equipment and its personnel is comprised of 194 individuals, 40 of whom are holders of MD and PhD titles. University of Illinois at Chicago (USA)
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is a public research university and the state’s major public medical center including seven colleges in health sciences. Special academic emphases include health disparities, urban transportation, violence prevention, healthcare administration, and ethnic diversity.
The research portfolio spans the full spectrum of translational research, including implementation science, and won the 2018 Orme Award for Community-Academic partnership in research. Training is a strength of the UIC Sickle Cell Center, with over 400 clinical trainees per year and dozens of research mentees. The Center is a leader in the Illinois Department of Public Health newborn screening program and has broad collaboration with sickle cell advocacy organizations.

Strathmore University (Kenya)
Strathmore University is a private not for profit University in Nairobi, Kenya. The University was founded in 2002 with a mission to provide all round quality education in an atmosphere of freedom and responsibility excellence in teaching, research and scholarship, ethical and social development and service to the society. The University’s key strategic pillars include teaching, research and service to society. Strathmore undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are competitive and of high quality offered to both local and international students.
The University Medical Centre in collaboration with the centre for research in therapeutic sciences runs a Sickle Cell Care Centre that currently has a cohort of 220 patients of all age groups. This is comprehensive Care Clinic is held every Tuesday of the week and has a multidisciplinary team comprising of paediatricians, physicians, haematologist, psychologist, physical therapists, surgeons, dentists, ophthalmologist and peer patient educators. This is to enable provision of all-round care of the patients without having to shuttle the patients across different clinics that can lead to loss to follow up.
Ahmadu Bello University (Nigeria)
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) is a Federal Government Teaching and research university, located in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria and founded in 1962.
The university operates three main campuses: Samaru and Kongo in Zaria, and a School of Basic Studies in Funtua. The university runs several undergraduate and graduate programmes. The university has a large medical programme with a Teaching Hospital (ABUTH). ABU has five institutes, six specialized centers, a Division of Agricultural Colleges, demonstration secondary and primary schools, as well as extension and consultancy services which provide a variety of services to the wider society. The total student enrolment in the university’s degree and sub-degree programmes is about 35,000, drawn from Nigeria and other parts of the world. There are about 1,400 teaching and research academic staff and 5,000 administrative and support staff.
Ahmadu Bello University works with the following partner institutions in the ARISE consortium: Department of Geography and Environmental Management, Kaduna State University, Kaduna State House of Assembly, PANAF schools, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital (BDTH) and SickleCell Cohort Research Foundation (SCORE).
Kaduna State University (Nigeria)
Kaduna State University is a state-owned and funded public university operational since 2004 in the state capital and Kafanchan campus, Makera campus is latest among the campuses. It offers a number of undergraduate and postgraduate degree and non-degree programs in the arts, sciences and humanities.
The College has since inception secured academic and professional accreditation and is poised to graduate its first alumni within the next calendar year.
The young College is research driven and has successfully secured national grants from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and is involved in collaborative research with international partners in the United States, United Kingdom, Asia and other parts of Africa.
Kaduna State Assembly (Nigeria)
The Kaduna State House of Assembly is the Legislative arm of the Government of Kaduna State it has 34 elected Legislators representing various constituencies across the State. The Legislature is empowered by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and it has the responsibility of making, amending and repealing laws that will improve on the wellbeing of the residents of Kaduna State.
PANAF schools (Nigeria)
PANAF Schools is a private Nursery, Primary, Secondary School and Cambridge A level Centre. It opened its doors to students on the 11th September 2000 and offers Education to children between the ages of 2-17 years with an integrated curriculum; Nigerian, British and Montessori methods.

PANAF premises is owned independently by the Director of the school. It is not rented or co-owned with another organisation, is a good research ground and has accepted to collaborate with this research for the success of the project.
Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital
Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria was established in 1967 as a regional Teaching Hospital that caters for the entire Northern Region of Nigeria with mandates of health care service delivery, training and research.
ABUTH offers specialized services to patients and accepts referrals from other health facilities across the country. In this regard, its medical services include: Adult and Paediatric Medical and Surgical care; Obstetric and Gynaecologic; Orthopaedic; Ophthalmologic; Psychiatric; and Public health; as well as paramedical and other components of health care.
ABUTH has six schools and one training programme, as follows: Residency Training Programme (Fellowships of the National Medical/Surgical Colleges and West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons), Community Health Officers Training Programme (CHO), School of Nursing (General Nursing),School of Midwifery & Post-Basic Nursing Programmes (Midwifery, Ophthalmic Nursing & Paediatric Nursing), School of Medical Laboratory Sciences (FIMLT&MLT), School of Biomedical Engineering (Certificate & Diploma Courses ) and School of Medical Information Management (Certificate Course, OND Course & HND Course).
ABUTH has engaged with numerous local and international partners since its inception, especially in researches into subjects of public health significance, such as maternal mortality, obstetric fistula, cardiomyopathies, childhood diarrheal disease, oral rehydration therapy, reproductive health and HIV/AIDS treatment and care etc. Currently, there are many collaborative programmes some of which are with: UNICEF, WHO, Rotary International, COMPASS-USAID, Harvard School of Public Health (PEPFAR), Vanderbilt Global Health and University of California, Berkeley.
Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital (Nigeria)
Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital (BDTH) was established by law in March 2015 but had existed since 1930 previously as Nursing Home, then as the New General Hospital and subsequently as Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital.
It is affiliated to the College of Medicine, Kaduna State University and provides tertiary health care to the over four million strong population in Kaduna city and its environs, with an in-patient capacity of 240 beds. It also serves as one of the referral centers for the North Western region of Nigeria.
The facility boasts state-of-the-art radio-diagnostics, a fledging in-vitro fertilization service, a strong research base in the basic clinical sciences where through the department of haematology and blood transfusion, it is in collaboration with other institutions for the study of primary stroke prevention in Sickle cell disease (SPRING trial) and the Sickle Pan-African research consortium (SPARCO). It is also the North west regional training centre for transcranial doppler.
The hospital has a specialist clinic that manages sickle cell disease with a combined enrolment of both paediatrics and adult sickle cell patients at about 4000.
With a four-pronged mission agenda in research, training, service delivery and medical enterprise, the institution competes favorably with other more established tertiary institutions in the region.
The rapidly growing Teaching Hospital has attracted international attention in various specialties, notably in the fields of sickle cell research and intervention initiatives.
Ministry of Health/ University Teaching Hospitals-Children’s Hospital
The University Teaching Hospitals (UTHs) – is part of a complex of 5 hospitals that include –Adult and Emergency hospital, Children’s’ Hospital, Women and Newborn Hospital, Eye Hospital and Cancer Diseases Hospital.
All these hospitals are tertiary level publicly funded hospitals and have a combined bed capacity of over 2000 beds. They are located in Lusaka on a one square kilometre area of land and provide both inpatient and outpatient care services.
The Adult and Emergency Hospital primarily caters for the adult population offering medical and surgical services. It also houses the diagnostic departments that offer laboratory and radiological support to all the other hospitals.
The existing services at the Children’s Hospital include general and specialized services that include: The Paediatric HIV Centre of Excellence (PCOE), Malnutrition, Haematology, Infectious diseases, Renal, Cardiac, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Pulmonology and 24hours Emergency care. Outpatient care is provided through the general paediatrics and specialist clinics and a well child unit that provides growth monitoring and vaccinations throughout the week.
Health Research Center of Angola
CISA – the Health Research Centre of Angola was founded through a partnership launched in 2007 between the Angolan government, the Portuguese government and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with the latter endowed with managing the project that led to the setting up of CISA.
The founding objective of the CISA launch project was to serve as a catalyst for biomedical research in Angola and thus contributing to the resolution of its key healthcare problems through epidemiological and clinical research into the most prevalent and relevant diseases to public health in Angola.
CISA is a public institution under the auspices of the Ministry of Health founded with the following mission:
- to carry out and promote healthcare research taking into consideration the needs and priorities of Angola
- to support national empowerment and building up national human resource capacities in the field of health research
- to foster the improvement in quality of healthcare services provided to the population
In terms of facilities, CISA has a Lab (Haematology, Biochemistry, Parasitology and Molecular Biology), Data Centre, Demographic Surveillance System, access to hospital wards at the Centro Materno Infantil das Mabubas (for clinical trials) and also access to the National Health Research
