My name is Inonge Akekelwa. I am a Zambian medical doctor working at the University Teaching Hospital under the haematology unit (Pathology and Microbiology department) in Lusaka, Zambia. I had the privilege of traveling to Udine, Italy for my secondment through the ARISE project under work package 5 (Enhancement of sickle cell disease management in molecular diagnostic techniques and performance of epidemiological and genetic research).

I was stationed at the University hospital ‘Santa Maria Della Miscericordia’ in the paediatric clinic from September to December 2023 and under the guidance of my supervisor, Dr Ilaria Liguoro. Participating in this secondment provided an enriching learning experience, offering in-depth insights into the complexities of managing and treating this condition. We attended to patients with different types of sickle cell disease uncommon to the sub Saharan African region. The holistic approach to patient care is very impressive, focusing on genetic counselling and meticulous adjustment of dosages accordingly, to mention just a few.

I enhanced my clinical skills by actively participating in clinical ward rounds and attending to patients in the clinic. I acquired modern techniques from the medical team and the fellow doctors graciously accommodated me. I completed several online courses offered by the American Society of Haematology and I participated in an ongoing research project.

I had a fantastic time during my stay in Italy, thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to learn about the best practises for managing sickle cell disease. I am immensely thankful to the ARISE Project team for facilitating this experience, to the hosting hospital for their exceptional hospitality, and to my sending institution at home for granting me this invaluable opportunity.
