We are pleased to let you know that the open access article Global Burden of Transfusion in Sickle Cell Disease is now available.

This review aims to provide an overview of the global burden of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), focusing on the availability of current treatments and the burden of chronic blood transfusions in patients with SCD.

Authors highlight that the prevalence of SCD is rising in developed countries, due to the migration of carriers from endemic regions. SCD comes with many comorbidities and blood transfusion remains the mainstay of treatment and disease management. However, the logistical burden of blood transfusion can reduce patients’ Quality of Life and can result in numerous downstream complications, placing a large economic burden on healthcare systems. Therefore, the need for advances in therapies and technologies is crucial.
