Dr Jacques Elion, MD, PhD, is Professor of Molecular Genetics at the Université de Paris and Visiting Professor at the Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil). He is the former Head of the Dept of Medical Genetics at the Robert Debré University Hospital in Paris, hosting one of the three laboratories of the French national program for sickle cell disease newborn screening. Dr Elion’s research at Unit 1134 of the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) is focused on pathophysiology, prevention and global care of SCD. The Unit is located at the National Institute of Blood Transfusion in Paris and at the University Hospital in Guadeloupe (FWI). It is part of the French Laboratory of Excellence on the Red Cell (GR-Ex). Dr Elion has developed extensive international collaborations notably in sub-Saharan Africa, India, the Caribbean and Brazil.
